Our Leadership Committee
Candace Parks – President
Candace had been looking in vain for an avenue to explore her spirituality for many years until she picked up a book called “Oh-Oh” by Robert Fulghum. In his book Fulghum makes what he calls “uncommon observations about common occurrences”. Through this journey, Candace discovered what many other Unitarians describe – that she has been a Unitarian right along and just didn’t know it. She was delighted to discover a Unitarian church in Sydney and became a member in March 2003.
Laurence Gormley – Vice President
Laurence was raised as a Roman Catholic but hasn’t practised since he was sixteen. Via the Internet, he has familiarised himself with Unitarianism which he feels broadly reflects his own view of spiritual beliefs with all the uncertainties and the necessity for a personal journey.
Laurence enjoys Spirit of Life because it gives him an association with an intellectually stimulating group of people, spiritual fulfilment and a sense of community.
Laurence has a keen interest in literature and music and spends a lot of time on his hobby of amateur writing. He has been living in Sydney for close to twenty years and resides in Darlinghurst with his partner Michael and their many fish.
Geoff Matthews – Treasurer
Geoff is a Sydney boy born and bred. He has lived though in Bathurst, Orange, Canberra and the US, and appreciates the rural way of life and the struggles of people in these environments.
His passion in his work is assisting people realise their dreams and aspirations. He has worked mostly in the people area over the last twenty years, as a corporate trainer, facilitator and career and business coach. He has his own business and a business with two other partners. He focuces these days as a career consultant, consulting to businesses in career management and coaching individuals in their career. He is also a business coach working with all levels of management. As a career coach, he understands that the more our work is in line with our life purpose, the greater the realisation of true work satisfaction. He believes he has achieved this.
His interest in Spirit of Life is his search to expand his spiritual understandings and enjoys the diversity and friendship of the fellowship. He has a daughter living on the Central Coast and a son in Singleton and four grandboys. His interests are horse racing, racing and breeding, exercising, being with friends and family and reading, and sports, still playing tennis.
Janet Horton - Secretary
Janet joined Spirit of Life after relocating from Minneapolis (USA) to Sydney in 2005. Raised Unitarian, she appreciates the sense of community, fresh ideas, and open-minded approach of the group.
